From seasoned professional to recent graduate, interpreting in psychiatric settings can pose special challenges. This workshop shines a light on these settings, how the mental health system works, the roles of various professionals, the role of the DSM system, and special challenges for interpreters including thought and language disorders caused my mental illnesses. Using the framework of interpreting as interaction, we examine the various common scenarios, the kinds of talk (including sign) that commonly happen in these interactions, and the functions of this talk, giving special attention to the mental status exam.
